JLF UK and UNM in Martin, Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery
Professor Anton Dzian, MD, PhD – Head of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University (JLF UK) and University Hospital Martin (UNM). His professional focus is primarily on pulmonary oncologic surgery, with a specialization in minimally invasive approaches such as robotic and uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). At the Department of Thoracic Surgery in Martin, he is recognized as an innovator who integrates modern surgical techniques into clinical practice.
He introduced uniportal VATS (video-assisted thoracic surgery), NITS (non-intubated thoracic surgery), and was the first in Slovakia to implement RATS (robotic-assisted thoracic surgery). In 2017, he performed a groundbreaking procedure in the Central European region—removal of the sternum and its replacement with a custom-made titanium implant created using 3D printing. This achievement earned him the TOP Innovation in Healthcare award.
In 2024, he was inaugurated and appointed Professor of Surgery, with his inaugural lecture titled "How Modern Technologies Influence Thoracic Surgery." In March 2024, together with his robotic team, he performed Slovakia’s first robotic thoracic surgeries (lobectomy, segmentectomy, and mediastinal tumor resection). He subsequently expanded the use of the DaVinci system to include complex procedures within the thoracic cavity, such as robotic sleeve lobectomy.
Professor Dzian has been the principal investigator and co-investigator in multiple grant projects and has published extensively in both domestic and international scientific journals, with a significant number of citations. He is also actively engaged in teaching and mentoring PhD students at the Department of Thoracic Surgery at JLF UK.
  • Precision and progress: Robotic thoracic surgery in clinical practice in Slovakia
Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (RATS) is undoubtedly a significant milestone in the development of thoracic surgery. Thanks to the combination of high accuracy of 3D imaging, precision of instruments and several advantages of a minimally invasive approach, the DaVinci robotic system has become a symbol of modern robotic surgery. In Slovakia, robotics in the chest began to be implemented in Martin in March 2024, and has currently moved from pilot procedures to standard established procedures in clinical practice. It plays a significant role, especially in lung oncosurgery. The lecture offers demonstrations of robotic lung surgeries - lobectomy, segmentectomy and advanced procedures such as "sleeve" lobectomy. Robotics has expanded the possibilities of thoracic surgery and contributed to even better patient care.
