Christopher Sharrock

Mr Sharrock is Director for UN Affairs and International Organisations, at Microsoft, based in Paris.  Prior to that he led work to establish a Data Science strategy at HM Treasury in the UK, and spent 5 years as the UK’s Permanent Representative, and Dean of the Ambassadors, at the OECD and IEA in Paris.  Previous senior roles include Deputy Director of Debt and Reserves Management at HM Treasury, and Chief Economist at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. He has worked across domestic, financial, EU and International policy, including in the Private Office of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. Before joining the UK Civil Service, he taught in schools in the UK.
  • How data science is used to build a digital state
    The use of statistics and data in public policy making is not new. But the growth of big data, increases in computational power, and development of machine learning techniques, have led to new analytical tools and approaches, collectively known as Data Science. This presentation will set out how these can be used by the public sector in building a digital state, and the conditions needed to make the most of these new developments.
