Mobile ID card - Conveniently, securely and multiplatformally. Can be done!
Since December 2013 Slovak Republic issues its citizens IDs with a chip. Traditional ID was upgraded to a new electronic feature that enables citizens to safely identify themselves in an electronic world. Moreover, upon a request the ID chip can be activated for electronic signature. This functionality is one of key pillars of eGovernment and provides citizens access to electronic boxes, to growing number of electronic public services, and with the option to electronically communicate with public administration. Citizen is no longer required to visit the office in person and wait in endless queues. Today citizen can handle majority of his business with public administration comfortably from his living room.
There is a small glitch though. To use ID features a desktop PC or a notebook with attached chip card reader is necessary. It is not possible to use it in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Mobile technologies progressively penetrate our world and are becoming its integral part. People use mobile phones and tablets much more to handle various tasks, personal as well as work related, wherever there is an internet access. Mobility is becoming the real accelerator of electronic service usage.
Enablement of public administration electronic services also in the mobile world is therefore a natural need and is more than desirable.
What will such a solution look like in technologically different environment of mobile platforms? New technological challenges and obstacles are emerging. Is it possible to implement into a mobile solution equivalent to IDs that will be similarly secure and that will be at the same time simple and user friendly just like in the world of mobile apps? Is it possible to implement such a solution for all major mobile platforms without need to install additional hardware security elements and readers? You will find answers to these questions in our presentation.
