Michal Vašečka
Doc. PhDr. Michal Vašečka, PhD. is a sociologist, studied at Masaryk University. Since 2017 he is the Programme Director of the Bratislava Policy Institute in Bratislava. He focuses on issues of ethnicity, migration, populism, extremism and civil society.
Previously, he worked at Masaryk University (2002-2017), Comenius University (2006-2009), Bratislava International School of Liberal Arts (2015-2023). Academically, he has been a visiting scholar at the New School University in New York (1996-1997), the University of London (1998), Georgetown University in Washington DC (2008-2009), the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (2015), as an ISGAP Scholar-In-Residence at Oxford University (2016), and at Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa College in Wisconsin (2019). He is the founder and former director (2006-2012) of the Center for Research on Ethnicity and Culture (CREC), and worked at the Institute for Public Affairs (IPA) from 1998-2005. From 2000-2012 he worked as a consultant for the World Bank.
Since 2012, he has served as the Slovak Republic's representative to ECRI, the human rights body of the Council of Europe. Since 2016, he has been Chairman of the Editorial Board of Denník N. From 2012-2016, he was a member of the Editorial Board of Aspen Review Central Europe. In 2017-2019, he was Vice-Chairman of the Intergovernmental Committee on the Elimination of Racism, Anti-Semitism, Xenophobia and All Forms of Intolerance (VRAX). From 2010-2017, he was the Chair of the Fulbright Commission Council in Slovakia. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Advisory Board of the European Centre for Minority Issues in Flensburg. Since 2017, he has been the President of the Presidium of the Platform for the Health Promotion of Marginalised Groups. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Carpathian Foundation since 2016, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of Willy Decius in Krakow from 2012-2020. He has been a member of the Advisory Board of the League for Mental Health since 2020. In 2018, he was the recipient of the Award of the Minister of Justice of the Slovak Republic for outstanding contribution in the field of human rights.
