Robert Hatala

The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, The head of the institute
He is the head of the Department of Cardiology and Angiology of the Faculty of Medicine of SZU and the National Institute of Heart and Vascular Diseases a.s. in Bratislava and at the same time head of the Department of Arrhythmias and Cardiac Stimulation. He graduated suma cum laude from the Medical Faculty of the Charles University in Bratislava, where he was also inaugurated as a professor of internal medicine-cardiology in 2001.

In the 1990s, he worked for several years at university clinics in Canada, France, Germany and Austria. His main areas of clinical and scientific interest are cardiac arrhythmias with a special focus on catheter ablation, sudden cardiac death and its prevention as well as arrhythmological aspects of coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension and heart failure.
In 1995, he founded the first specialized center for the complex treatment of arrhythmias in Slovakia, which currently treats around 1,500 patients a year, in which around 2,000 interventions are carried out together with pediatric patients.
He is the author or co-author of more than 80 publications in professional journals and 300 presentations at leading world congresses and symposia of international and national significance. As an invited speaker, he lectured in several world languages ​​(English, German, French and Russian) in more than 30 countries. He was repeatedly elected president of the Slovak Society of Cardiology and the Slovak Association of Cardiac Arrhythmias. Since 2011, he has worked in various committees of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), in 2017-2018 as scientific secretary of the European Heart Arrhythmia Association (EHRA).
He is an honorary member of several cardiology societies abroad. From 2020 holds the position of executive editor of the European Heart Journal.
In 2023, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Semmelweiss University in Budapest.
